UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh has been elected Vice Chairman to the committee on Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) for the next five years.
Bangladesh has been a member of the HFA, which is the first plan to explain, describe and detail the work that is required from all different sectors and actors to reduce disaster losses.
The nomination for Bangladesh was made at the third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction that began in Sendai on Saturday, according to a media release issued on Sunday.
Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya is attending the conference.
The minister presented a country paper in the conference on Sunday.
HFA was developed and agreed on with the many partners needed to reduce disaster risk-governments, international agencies, disaster experts and many others-bringing them into a common system of coordination.
Its goal is to substantially reduce disaster losses by 2015 by building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters. This means reducing the loss of lives and social, economic, and environmental assets when hazards strike.
