Bangladesh lost to Sri Lanka by 259 runs in the first Test on the fifth and final day at Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka piled up a mammoth total of 494 in the first innings on the second day (Wednesday).
In reply, Bangladesh made 312 in the first innings on the third day (Thursday).
Later, Sri Lanka declared their second innings scoring 274 for the loss of six wickets on the fourth day (Friday) and set a target of 457 runs to win for their counterpart Bangladesh.
Bangladesh were at 67 for the loss of none at the close of the fourth day’s play.
Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal resumed their second innings with the over-night score of 53 and 13 runs respectively.
But Soumya and Tamim failed to add any run on the fifth day as Soumya was bowled out by Asela Gunaratne in his second delivery of the day.
One-down Mominul Haque (5) was trapped leg before wicket by Dilruwan Perera when the tourists’ total was 80 for the loss of two wickets.
Then Tamim Iqbal (19) was caught at the slip by Gunaratne off Perera when the visitors’ score was 83 for the loss of three wickets.
Third-down Shakib Al Hasan (8) was caught at the leg slip by Dimuth Karunaratne off Rangana Herath when Bangladesh’s total was 104 for the loss of four wickets.
Then Mahmudullah Riyad arrived but he could stay at the crease for a short period as he (0) was trapped leg before wicket by Herath when Bangladesh’s score was 104 for the loss of five wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das put on together 54 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before Mushfiqur Rahim was caught behind by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella when the Tigers’ total was 158 for the loss of six wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim made a sedate 34 from 98 balls featuring two fours.
Liton Das notched up a fine 35 playing 62 balls. He hit two fours before he was caught at the cover by Upal Tharanga off Rangana Herath when Bangladesh’s score was 166 for the loss of seven wickets.
Then Taskin Ahmed (5) was caught at the short leg by Kusal Mendis off Herath when Bangladesh’s total was 180 for the loss of eight wickets.
Mustafizur Rahman (0) was bowled out by Herath when Bangladesh’s score was 194 for the loss of nine wickets.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz (28) was caught at the mid-off by Lahiru Kumara off Herath when Bangladesh’s innings came to an end.
Herath bowled extremely well and finished his superb spell with 20.2-5-59-6.
Dilruwan Perera bagged a pair of wickets at the cost of 66 runs.
Besides, Asela Gunaratne and Lakshan Kumara took one wicket each for 16 and 29 runs respectively.
Kusal Mendis made 194 in the first innings and scored 19 runs in the second innings. Mendis was adjudged the Man of the Match for his outstanding batting performance.
The second Test begins in Colombo from 15th of this month.
