Bangladesh took the command making a mammoth total of 522 runs for the loss of seven wickets against Zimbabwe on the second day of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Monday.
Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten with 219. His 421-ball innings was ornamented with 18 fours and a sixer. Mushfiq fulfilled his double century utilizing 407 balls with 16 fours and a six. It was Mushfiq’s second double century in Test cricket. Besides, it was the highest score by any Bangladeshi batsman in Test cricket.
Zimbabwe were at stumps 25 for the loss of one wicket and trailed Bangladesh by 497 runs in the first innings.
Bangladesh resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 303 for the loss of five wickets with Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad on 111 and naught respectively.
They put on together 73 runs for the sixth wicket stand before Riyad was caught behind by Regis Chakabva off Kyle Jarvis when the team’s total was 372 for the loss of six wickets.
Riyad made a painstaking 36. His 110-ball knock saw three fours.
After Riyad’s departure, Ariful Haque came to the crease for a short period as he (4) was caught at the point by Brian Chari off Kyle Jarvis when Bangladesh’s score was 378 for the loss of seven wickets.
Then Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz rebuilt the innings contributing together 144 runs for the unbroken eighth wicket partnership. Miraz remained unbeaten with 68. His 102-ball marvellous innings was decorated with five fours and a six.
Miraz reached the fifty-run landmark using 78 deliveries. It was Mehidy’s second Test half-century.
Kyle Jarvis was the day’s most successful bowler. He bagged two more wickets on the second day. He finished his worthy spell as 28-6-71-5.
However, Zimbabwe had a poor start in their first innings as opener Hamilton Masakadza (14) was caught at the first slip by Mehidy Hasan Miraz off Taijul Islam when the tourists’ score was 20 for the loss of one wicket.
Brian Chari and Donald Tiripano were on 10 and naught respectively before the umpires drew the bails for the second day.
Taijul Islam took one wicket for five runs.
