Tripura Tourism Minister Ratan Bhowmik has lauded Bangladesh government for helping the north-eastern states in establishing peace by taking steps against Indian militant groups that took shelter in that country.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a four-day tourism road show,
Maitri Tourism 2014 in Agartala on Saturday. The show aims to promote tourism between Bangladesh and India.
“There was a time when our state was militant infested and our government naturally was not happy with Bangladesh as militants used its soil for their nefarious activities.
“But even then the relation between the people of the two countries had never been affected,” the minister said.
Recalling the action taken by the Awami League-led Bangladesh government in flushing out militants holed up in that country, Bhowmik said such steps helped Tripura regaining peace.
Claiming that even Bangladesh was witnessing similar peaceful situation, he said the spell of peace lead to development both in Tripura and Bangladesh, which enable both to work jointly.
“For tourism industry to flourish, the people on both sides have to know what is there in each other’s territory,” said Bhowmik.
Bangladesh Foundation for Tourism Development (BFTD), Bangladesh Inbound Tour Operators Association, Tripura Tourism Development Forum in collaboration with Tripura Tourism Development Corporation are jointly organising the show.
The main objective of the event is to encourage tourists of both the countries to visit places of interest and establish tourism networks with stakeholders of the north-eastern states of India and Bangladesh.
