Bangladesh’s power plants have set a new record of power generation.
The electricity generation on Saturday evening was 8,942 megawatt, which is an all-time high, according to Power Development Board Public Relations Officer Saiful Hasan Chowdhury. The previous record was of 8,776MW on June 15. According to the PDB, power generation has doubled in the past seven years since the Awami League government took charge in 2009. The highest generation in 2008 was 4,036 MW.
On Jun 2, Finance Minister AMA Muhith in his budget speech said that until May the country’s power generation capacity had been at 14,539 MW. The government wants to generate 16,000 MW of electricity more to reach the target for its ‘Vision 2021’.
To achieve that, the minister said the government plans to set up eight more power plants while 29 more remain under-construction and the tender process of 20 others are underway.
Saying Bangladesh currently imports 600 MW from India, Muhith said the government was working to implement a plan to import 6,500 MW from all neighbouring countries by 2030 under a sub-regional assistance programme.
