UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh is looking for leading the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the only global organisation of national parliaments, as Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP has floated his candidature for its President election, said an official. The IPU will be electing a new President to succeed Abdelwahad Radi during its Geneva Assembly in October 2014.
There are currently 164 members and 10 associate members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), said the official. State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam said Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended full support to Saber terming it an ‘individual race’. He, however, said it would be very tough election as candidates from other countries, including Australia and Indonesia, are contesting the election for the President post. On July 7, Saber Hossain Chowdhury wrote to IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and submitted his candidature. “I’m pleased to advise and notify you of my candidature for the post of President, Inter-Parliamentary Union. The Bangladesh Parliament is fully supportive of my candidature and is ready to extend all possible assistance,” his letter reads.
