BD eyes increased business with India’s NE states

Bangladesh has expressed its desire to bring substantive changes in terms of connectivity and wants to more actively engage in enhancing its business relations with India’s North East States through better connectivity.
“Air connectivity between Guwahati to Dhaka and Shillong to Agartala via Dhaka could be explored after examining its commercial viability,” said Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Thursday.
He was addressing the third North East Connectivity Summit in Agartala, Tripura with the theme of Trade with Bangladesh, South East Asia and People-to-People Connectivity.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Nagaland Chief Minister T R Zeliang and Industries and Commerce Minister of Tripura Tapan Chakraborty, among others, spoke at the inaugural session held with Ranjit Barthakur in the chair, according to the Industries Ministry here.
Amu said Bangladesh and India are now enjoying the best friendly relationship ever and willing to improve physical connectivity.
He said Bangladesh wants greater economic integration, particularly with India’s north east and it will facilitate north east’s socioeconomic development and better connectivity with the rest of India.
The Industries Minister said they are cooperating with India in many ways to enhance connectivity for the north east and beyond the region with Bangladesh serving as the hub of regional connectivity.
“We want to ensure seamless connectivity in the region that might lead to collective prosperity,” he said.
The Industries Minister also talked about the importance of the BCIM (Bangladesh, China, India, and Myanmar) Economic Corridor. “I believe that the proposed economic corridor of BCIM has huge prospects in the areas of trade, investment, energy, transport and tourism.”
