The Embassy of Bangladesh in Korea honoured outstanding Bangladesh workers and Korean employers this month in celebration of the UN-designated International Migrants Day.
Observed on every Dec 18, International Migrants Day aims to raise awareness about the challenges and difficulties of international migration.
Under Korea’s Employment Permit System (EPS), Bangladesh has for years been supplying labourers for manufacturing, farming, fishing and other industries that have been struggling to find manual labourers. More than 10,000 Bangladeshi workers are here.
During a ceremony at the embassy, Dec 18, 15 EPS workers who met the criteria of the embassy and 11 Korean employers hiring the highest number of employees from Bangladesh in a single workplace were honoured with a crest and a certificate. Some of the 15 workers had multiple honours.
In accordance with social distancing regulations, the ceremony was open to embassy staff only and the certificates were mailed to the 26 awardees.
Calling the 15 workers “remittance warriors,” Bangladeshi Ambassador to Korea Abida Islam highlighted their important contributions to the socio-economic development of the two countries.
“She greatly admired the hard work, devotion and skill of the 10,000 EPS workers,” the embassy said in a statement, adding the ambassador asked them to “comply with the health guidelines of the host government during the pandemic.”
Of the 15 Bangladeshi awardees, five were honoured for remitting the highest amount of foreign exchange to Bangladesh during the 2019-20 fiscal year; three for staying under the same employer for the longest period of time; three for receiving awards presented by the Korean government; five for attaining language proficiency; and two for engaging in volunteer work.
