BD elected Unesco confce’s chair on diversity, cultural expressions

Bangladesh has unanimously been elected chair of the upcoming sixth session of the Conference of the Parties for the convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions to be held in Paris on June 12-15.
The Unesco headquarters conveyed the decision to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs through email on Saturday, a senior official at the Ministry said on Sunday.
The Asia pacific electoral group has unanimously decided that Bangladesh will chair the session to be held in Unesco headquarters.
Representatives from 44 countries of the Asia Pacific region extended their support to chair the session.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor has been invited to chair the session, which is expected to provide parties as well as observers with a space to share information on the impact of the Convention in their countries.
This sixth session of the Conference of Parties will approve operational guidelines on the implementation of the Convention in the digital environment, according to the Unesco headquarters.
The parties will have the opportunity to present their activities to implement the Convention at the national and international levels.
The conference will also decide on the future activities of the Committee for 2017-2019 and the Parties will review the new quadrennial periodic reports of the Parties to the Convention, as well as the reports on the status of the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) and the implementation of its fundraising strategy.
Besides, the Conference of the Parties will elect 12 new members of the Intergovernmental Committee.
The Conference of Parties is made up of representatives of 145 Parties to the Convention. They meet in ordinary session every two years in June.
