A group of researchers from the Department of Fisheries Biology & Genetics of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have successfully decoded the genome of hilsa- national fish of the country.
The achievement was gained under the leadership of Dr Shamsul Alam, a professor of Fisheries Biology and Genetics. The others members of the research team are- Professor Shahidul Islam Dr Golam kader khan and Professor Dr Bazlur Rahman Molla.
In a press conference, chief researcher Dr Shamsul Alam made the announcement on Saturday.
The researchers at BAU headed by Prof Dr Md Shamsul Alam started the research on Hilsa in December 2015. He coordinated the Hilsa Genome & Assembly Team.
Following the research, Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) and the country’s fisheries sector have entered a new genome research era.
A genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA, including all of its genes. Each genome contains all of the information needed to build and maintain that organism.
Prof Dr Md Shamsul Alam said, “Hilsa is our national fish. Around 60 per cent of the world’s total production of hilsa is in Bangladesh. Some 4 lakh people have directly involved in this sector. So, it is important to ensure proper management and sustainable collection of this national wealth.”
