The ‘Bangladesh Coinage (Amendment) Bill- 2015’ was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad for turning the Taka five note as the legal tender coin.
Referring to the necessity of brining an amendment to the Article 4 of Bangladesh Coinage Order-1972, the minister said, “Presently the purchasing capacity or power of notes and coins of Taka 2.0 as well as Taka 1.0 reduced significantly.”
According to the amendment, the word ‘two’ will be replaced by the word ‘five’ in the Article 4 of the Coinage Order Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Tuesday tabled the bill in the House.
“The passes of the bill won’t have any impact on inflation as the total supply of money in the country will remained unchanged,” Muhith said.
In 1974-75 fiscal year, the legal tender coin was 10.70 percent of the total money in circulation, which came down to 0.90 percent in the last 2013-14 fiscal, the minister added.
