Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said Bangladesh’s relations with Canada have further consolidated and deepened through her recent visit to the North American country.
“The high-level (bilateral) visit took place after a span of three decades and through the tour, the Dhaka-Ottawa relations have been strengthened and deepened further,” she told a press conference at her official residence Ganobhaban in the afternoon.
The press conference was convened to brief the media on the outcomes of her recent visits to Canada and the USA. Sheikh Hasina paid a four-day official visit to Canada on September 15-18 to attend the 5th Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund (GF) at the personal invitation of her Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau. She visited the USA on September 18-28 to join the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and other related events.
While addressing the inaugural session of the 5th Replenishment Conference held in Montreal on September 16-17, the Prime Minister said, she called upon the international community to work together to prevent three of the world’s most devastating diseases-AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
“I also put importance to healthcare services for women development and empowerment and their active participation,” she said.
She said, she requested Justin Trudeau to extradite Noor Chowdhury, the self-confessed killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, from Canada, saying his trial would be held as per the existing law of the country.
In this connection, she said, Justin Trudeau expressed deep sympathy about the August 15 carnage and mentioned some legal barriers to extraditing Noor Chowdhury.
He, however, underscored the importance of starting talks between proper representatives to find out a way to resolve the sensitive issue after ensuring justice. The Prime Minister said she invited Justin Trudeau to visit Bangladesh which he cordially accepted.
About her participation in various events of the 71st Session of the UNGA, Sheikh Hasina said while delivering her statement at the general debate, she urged the world community to find out the mentors, masterminds, abettors, financiers, arms suppliers and trainers of the terrorists and extremists and take stern actions against them. Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the Women Leadership and Gender Perspective on Preventing and Countering Violence Extremism, the Prime Minister said, she termed women education a very strong weapon in stopping violent terrorism and extremism.
At a high-level meeting on Leaders’ Summit on Refugees along with 31 heads of state and governments at the invitation of US President Barak Obama, Sheikh Hasina said she shared her own experience of passing a refugee life after 1975 and called upon the world community to behave friendly with the refugees.
The Prime Minister said she also delivered speeches in a number of side events like the launching event of “Making Every Woman and Girl Count”, the High-Level Panel on Water, in a the side-event on “South-South and Triangular Cooperation in scaling up innovation in public service delivery”.
Besides, she also attended a views-exchange meeting with the US Business Council for International Understanding and called upon the US businessmen to invest in Bangladesh’s various sectors like power and energy, communication, ICT, marine resources, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and tourism.
Apart from these, Sheikh Hasina said, she held meetings with a number of world leaders, including Swiss President Johan Schneider-Amman, Myanmar’s State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung Sung Suu Kyi and the World Bank President, the President of European Council, the Commonwealth secretary general and the executive chairman of the World Economic Forum.
