Bangladesh made a good start in the Tri-Nation ODI series thrashing Zimbabwe by eight wickets in their opening match at the flood-lit Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.
Sent to bat first, Zimbabwe scored 170 in 49 overs.
In reply, Bangladesh coasted home in just 28.3 overs making 171 for the loss of two wickets only.
Bangladesh lost their opener Anamul Haque for just 19 runs. He was caught by Craig Ervine off Sikandar Raza when the home side’s total was 30.
Then opener Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan salvaged their team from danger contributing together 78 runs for the second wicket partnership before Shakib Al Hasan was trapped leg before wicket by Sikandar Raza when Bangladesh’s total was 108.
Shakib hit a polished 37. His 46-ball innings had five fours. Hasan was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
Tamim Iqbal remained unbeaten with splendid 84. His 93-ball knock was ornamented with eight fours and a sixer. Tamim fulfilled his 39th ODI half century in 59 deliveries.
After Shakib’s departure, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim put on together 63 runs for the unbroken third wicket stand to reach the winning target of 171 runs.
Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten with 14.
Sikandar Raza got two wickets conceding 53 runs.
Earlier, Zimbabwe faced an early debacle as they lost first four wickets for 51 runs.
Shakib Al Hasan with the help of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman played the key role to batter the top order batsmen of Zimbabwe.
Then Sikandar Raza and Malcolm Waller contributed together 30 runs in the fifth wicket stand before Waller (13) was caught at the first slip by Sabbir Rahman off Sunzamul Islam when the African side’s score was 81 for the loss of five wickets.
After Waller’s dismissal, Sikandar Raza and Peter Moor repaired the damage adding together 50 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before Raza was run out by a joint attempt of Shakib Al Hasan and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim when Zimbabwe’s total was 131 for the loss of six wickets.
Sikandar Raza knocked a patient 52. His 99-ball innings sparked with two fours and two sixes. It was Raza’s ninth one-day half century.
After Raza’s departure, Peter Moor and Graeme Cremer put on together 31 runs before Cremer (12) was caught at the long-off by Rubel Hossain off Shakib Al Hasan when Zimbabwe’s score was 161 for the loss of seven wickets.
Moor hit a polished 33 from 58 balls featuring two fours before he was bowled out by a yorker of Rubel Hossain when Zimbabwe’s total was 167 for the loss of eight wickets.
Then Rubel Hossain dismissed Tendai Chatara (0) and Mustafizur Rahman removed Blessing Muzarabani (1) to bring Zimbabwe’s innings to an end.
Shakib Al Hasan grabbed three wickets at the cost of 43 runs, while Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman bagged a couple of wickets each instead of 24 and 29 runs respectively.
Besides, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Sunzamul Islam took one wicket each for 25 and 29 runs respectively.
