The government has given a special permission to export about 2080 tonnes of hilsa to India on the eve of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.
The export permission will remain valid till October 10 this year.
“Permission has been given to 52 exporters to export hilsa to India as a token of good gesture ahead of Durga Puja,” commerce secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh told The New Nation on Monday.
‘Each exporter has given permission to export 40 tonnes of hilsa to our neighbouring country this time,’ he said. Earlier, over 100 traders sought the government approval to export hilsa to India and the commerce ministry approved 52 of them.
Export of hilsa has remained banned since 2012 as the government included the fish in the list of export-restricted item.
