Bangladesh Chharta Union (BCU) on Tuesday observed strike in all the educational institutions, protesting Sunday’s police attack on its leaders and activists when they tried to ghaerao the Dhaka Metropolitan Police office, demanding arrest of the culprits, of Pahela Baishakh incident.
Responding to the call of BCU, the Progressive Students’ Alliance (PSA), a platform of some left leaning student organisations, also observed strike in the country’s educational institutions. The strike was held peacefully on the university and college campuses except at the Jagannath University (JnU). Ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) allegedly attacked the PSA leaders and activists, during the strike.
The alliance claimed that four of its activists had been injured in Tuesday’s attack, which the BCL’s JnU unit rejected outright.
Chhatra Front JnU unit President Masud Rana said that the alliance’s activists assembled in front of the university gate in the morning as part of their programme. He alleged that the BCL JnU unit President Shariful Islam’s supporters attacked the Jote activists around 8am. International Affairs Secretary of BCL JnU unit Nur Ruhul engineered the attack.
Chhatra Front’s Office Secretary ‘Prasenjit’, Publicity Secretary ‘Krishna’, ‘Soumit’ and another student leader were injured in the attack, Rana alleged.
Rejecting the allegation, Sharif said, “The general students were trying to unlock the gate to attend the classes and sit for the examinations. No BCL activist was there.” JnU acting Proctor Nur Mohammad refused to make any comment on the incident.
The final examinations were exempted from the strike at Dhaka University (DU). No class was held and no untoward incident took place on the campus. The BCU and the PSA leaders and activists brought out processions in favour of the strike. They also held rallies in the university.
BCU DU unit President Liton Nondi told The New Nation that the general students observed the strike on the DU campus and expressed their solidarity with the BCU demands.
Meanwhile, the BCU and the PSA leaders and activists observed the strike at Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Barisal University, Khulna University, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University and different colleges across the country.
