Left-leaning student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra Union on Monday demanded immediate resignation of the Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for his irresponsible remarks over rape and murder of comilla Victoria college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.
Chhatra union General Secretary JM Jilani Shuvo made the demand while speaking at a press conference held at Madhu’s canteen of the Dhaka University (DU) at noon. Chhatra Union described various aspects of movement for Tonu at the press conference.
Shuvo said that the home minister has lost his right to hold the ministry as he (minister) at a function recently told that one or two unexpected incidents do not aggravate law and order in the country.
“Such type of irresponsible speech from such an important person is shameful for us, we demand his resignation immediately” he said.
Citing the ongoing movement demanding justice for Tonu, Shuvo said about 400 schools and colleges expressed solidarity with the Chhatra union called daylong strike at educational institutions across the country on Monday demanding justice for Tonu.
Earlier in the morning, Chhatra union activists staged a demonstration at Tejgaon College in the capital where they demanded resignation of the home minister as the government yet to arrest killers of Tonu, he said.
The protesters condemned law enforcement agencies’ “failure” to arrest anyone in this connection.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union will also hold a rally on Dhaka University campus on April 10 demanding immediate arrest of the killers of Tonu who was found murdered inside Comilla cantonment on March 20. The party’s district units will submit a memorandum to 64 districts’ deputy commissioners on April 7 to press home the demand, she said.
Earlier on Sunday, students of various educational institutions, including Dhaka University, Chittagong University, and Jahangirnagor University observed a daylong strike.
On the same day, the Progressive Students’ Alliance and Anti Imperialism Students’ Alliance announced a four day ultimatum to the government to arrest the rapist and killers of Tonu, or they would lay siege to the home ministry on April 7.
