Ceramic makers on Monday urged the government not to hike the gas price for the sake of the local industry.
They made the call at a press conference organised by Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCMEA) at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.
Addressing media, BCMEA President Sirajul Islam Mollah said the entrepreneurs and five lakh people in the sector are now under threat of surviving due to the increasing trend of gas prices.
He also urged the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) not to increase the gas price so that the Bangladesh ceramic sector can contribute to implementing the government’s vision 2041 to turn the country into a developed one.
Mollah said the local ceramic industry has 70 ceramic mills producing tableware, tiles and sanitary ware with an investment of Tk 13,500 core while the sector has been earning Tk 400 crore as foreign export annually so far. BCMEA General Secretary Irfan Uddin also spoke at the briefing.
