Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President Saifur Rahman Shohag has attended a programme in Pabna after reaching there in a helicopter.
The incident has been condemned by leaders of the Awami League coalition. Shohag used the helicopter to fly from Dhaka to a Partex Aviation event in Ishwardi Upazila on Friday evening.
Awami League Office Secretary and former BCL leader Abdul Ahad Babu was very critical of Sohag .
“The BCL president and members think of themselves as rulers of the country,” he told bdnews24.com.
“When we were BCL members we would work
all day, walking everywhere on foot with little more than Tk 5-10 in our pockets. Now even the junior leaders want a microbus for every occasion. The student affiliate has become so commercialised.”
Ishwardi Municipal Awami League President and Municipal Mayor Abul Kalam Azad Mintu said, “As a former BCL activist, I find such behaviour unacceptable.”
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is leading the development of our country, and this blatant display of power is counterproductive.”
“The decadence is event, questions are raised about how much the BCL leader earns,” said Workers’ Party’s District President Zakir Hossain. “Local Awami League leaders should investigate.”
Local student activists were unwilling to speak on the incident and Shohag’s mobile phone was turned off when bdnews24.com attempted to reach him for comment.
Shohag was present at the launch event of a series of rallies and workshops on ‘fighting militancy, terrorism, drugs and communal violence’ in Ishwardi on Friday.
The chief guest at the event was the Director of Abdul Hamid College Rasel Ahmed Tuhin, who arrived by road. Shafiqur Rahman Konok, the son of Land Minister and local MP Shamsur Rahman Sherif, hosted the event.
The land minister’s daughter and the district Awami League’s Women’s Affairs Secretary Mahjabeen Shirin Piya and district BCL General Secretary Shibli Sadiq also spoke at the event.
Shohag is also scheduled to attend a BCL meeting in Ishwardi on Saturday.
It has been alleged that the event was organised so the land minister’s son could influence the meeting.
The Pabna BCL President Ruhul Amin says he has ‘no idea’ about the meeting.
“The meeting has been arranged without the permission of the district BCL,” he told bdnews24.com “I have not been told anything about it officially.”
