A group of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) allegedly severed the right leg ankle of a Shibir leader and also shot him on his chest on Rajshahi University (RU) campus on Monday.
The victim was identified as Md Rasel Alam, a fourth year student of Finance and Banking department and secretary of Nawab Abdul Latif hall Shibir unit of the university. He was rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Duty doctor of RMCH, told the reporters that Rasel is now in a critical condition as his right ankle has been severed and he also received gun shot on his chest.
Protesting the attack, Shibir RU unit called a half-day hartal for today (Tuesday) in Rajshahi district, said a Shibir press release.
Around 3.50pm, police conducted raid in the on going exam hall and arrested a Shibir leader from there in connection with the attack on BCL leaders Togor Mohammad Saleh and Abdullah Al Masud on April 29. The arrestee was identified as Ziauddin Bablu alias Hasib, a fourth year student of Arabic department and also Human Resources

Witnesses said, around 25 BCL leaders and activists led by its RU unit general secretary Touhid Al Tuhin gathered in front of the Shahidullah Arts building at about 3:00pm where the scheduled exam of fourth year final of Arabic department from 1:00pm to 5:00pm was going on. The arrested Shibir leader Ziauddin Bablu was also an examinee.
They said around 4:00pm, the BCL leaders and activists led by RU unit organizing secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu, joint secretary Golam Kibria, local leaders Faruk, Mizan and Don took Rasel in Shahidullah Arts building.
On hearing gun shots, police entered inside the building and found Rasel’s right leg ankle severed and he was shot on his chest.
Tanvir Haider Chowdhury, Deputy Police Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) said some unidentified miscreants severed ankle of Shibir leader Rasel and also shot him with pistol inside the Shahidullah Arts building main entrance at 4:15pm.
Additional cops have been deployed on the campus to avert any further untoward incidents, he added.
Shibir RU unit publicity secretary Labib Abdullah alleged that BCL leaders and activists backed by police severed ankle of Rasel and shot him on his chest.
RU unit BCL president Mizanur Rahaman Rana denied the allegation and said the BCL has no connection with the attack.
Prof Tarikul Hasan, the university proctor said that campus security had been beefed up to avert further untoward situation.
