The president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union’s Chittagong University for Engineering and Technology (CUET) Unit was allegedly beaten up on the university campus on Wednesday by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit of CUET.
Following the incident, Manishi Roy, a final-year student of Urban and Regional Planning department, received primary treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
CUET Chhatra Union General Secretary Aniruddha Das said five to six of BCL activists led by Atanu, Fahad and Emat, who are known to be loyal to Cuet BCL President Syed Imam Baker, called out and dragged Manishi down to BCL office from Gol Chattar area of the campus. “After taking him there, they asked Manishi not to hold our 26th council on the campus, scheduled for September 27 [tomorrow]. As he strongly protested their demand, they locked in an altercation,” Aniruddha added.
“At one point, the BCL activists started beating him up indiscriminately,” he said, adding that later, some senior Chhatra Union leaders and activists rescued him and took him to CMCH.
Chhatra Union has made verbal complaints to the university authorities, urging necessary actions against the attackers.
Contacted, CUET BCL President Syed Imam Baker claimed that the incident was a mere misunderstanding.
CUET Vice Chancellor Prof Rafiqul Alam said, “Stern actions will be taken against the BCL men if they are found involved in the incident after due investigation.”
The central executive committee of Bangladesh Chhatra Union protested the incident and demanded punishment for the attackers.
