BCL men beat theatre activist at RU

A group of leaders and activists of Rajshahi University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League allegedly beat a theatre activist on campus on Tuesday night over a trivial matter. The injured theatre activist is Moinul Islam, a
final year student of mass communication and journalism department of the university and also a member of the university theatre troop, Anushilon Natya Dal. He is now undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
Witnesses said, Moinul along with his two friends were sitting at a tea stall in front of the university’s Mumtazuddin Arts Building on Tuesday around 8pm.
BCL RU unit information and research affairs secretary Md Mahmudur Rahman Kanon and RU Arts Faculty unit joint-secretary Jholok Sarkar told Moinul and his friends to leave the place immediately, causing an altercation between them.
At one stage, Kanon punched the right eye of Moinul, felling him to the ground, and later Jholok and his co-activists also took part in the beating, eyewitnesses said.
The BCL leaders and activists forced Moinul’s friends to refrain from help him, eyewitnesses also said.
Later, Moinul’s friends rushed him to the RU Medical Centre where doctors referred him to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
Quoting doctor, Sujon Nazeer, one of the activists of the theatre troop told UNB that Moinul had gotten injuries in his right eye and his head.
