Staff Reporter: At least nine teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) were injured in an attack by the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Sylhet on Sunday morning.According to the reports, a faction of teachers carrying banners and festoons gathered in front of the Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Aminul Haque Bhuiyan’s office at about 8.27am and tried to resist him from going to his office, some BCL activists started assaulting them physically and snatched away their banners.A section of teachers under the banner of Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad set a demonstration programme in front of the VC office from 9am to 5pm yesterday, demanding the resignation of the VC. They have been demanding his resignation since April 13. Following the incident, additional police forces have been deployed on the university campus.Meanwhile, the agitating teachers announced that they would observe a three-hour work abstention and stage demonstration on the campus today (Monday), protesting the BCL activists’ attack on them. Prof Sayed Shamsul Islam, convener of Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad said, “BCL activists carried out attack on us leaving at least nine teachers injured. Vice Chancellor has let loose BCL activists on us.” He said Professor Dr Yesmeen Huq, wife of Professor Zafar Iqbal, Professor Mohammad Youns, former President of Teachers’ Association, Professor Abdul Gani incumbent General Secretary of Teachers’ Association, Professor ANK Samaddar, Professor Mostofa Kamal Masud, Professor Faruque Uddin, Professor Hassanuzzaman and Associate Professor were beaten by the BCL workers.”Besides, the BCL activists also assaulted me physically. It is very unfortunate that the BCL activists abused Professor Dr Yesmeen Huq who fell down on the ground,” Prof Sayed Shamsul Islam said.Talking to The New Nation on Sunday, Officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station Akter Hossain said that they were carrying investigation into the incident.”A group of BCL activists clashed with a section of teachers on the university campus on Sunday morning. And some teachers were assaulted. A heavy contingent of law enforcers have been deployed in and around the university campus to avert further untoward incident,” he said. Vice Chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan complained that a section teachers in the name of movement assaulted him while he was entering his office.Talking to the journalists Professor Zafar Iqbal termed the attack as barbaric one, saying he did not think of such incident on the campus.”BCL workers attacked the teachers. If they are the students of this university, I should commit suicide by hanging myself,” expressing grave concern over the attack he said. Imran Hossain, General Secretary of BCL university unit, rejected the accusation brought against them, blaming general students for the attack.
