Students striving hard to sit for the Dhaka University (DU) admission tests a second time were allegedly assaulted on Friday when they were staging demonstration on the campus.
They blamed a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) DU unit for the attack, but the ruling Awami League student front rejected the accusation outright.
Nilkhet police outpost Sub-Inspector Shaheb Ali said that they had heard that an unpleasant incident took place near the TSC.
One of the protesters,
Tanni Musra, said that they were agitating in front of the TSC’s Raju Bhaskarya from 10am. “At 11am, a group of youths came and asked us whether we were DU students and had ID cards,” she said. Then threatened and pounced on us,” she claimed. The attackers allegedly tore up the banners of the protesters and snatched microphones. The students also claimed that the attackers were Chhatra League activists.
TV footages showed a group of youths throwing punches at several other purported protesters.
A DU student present at the spot claimed that the BCL activists led by its Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall unit President Darul Salam Shakil took part in the incident.
But Shakil denied the allegation, saying he was asleep when the incident occurred.
DU acting Proctor Amzad Ali said he had heard of the attack.
“However, it is not clear whether anyone from the Chhatra League was involved,” he said.
It may be mentioned that on Sept 14, the DU decided not to give a second chance to admission-seekers to their dismay.
