UNB, Narayanganj :
A local Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader reportedly stormed the venue of a meeting on law and order at Sonargaon UNO office auditorium on Thursday and swooped on BNP candidate from Narayanganj-3 constituency Azharul Mannan.
After the incident, Rony Billal, organising secretary of Sonargaon municipality unit BCL, was held and sentenced to three months’ jail by a mobile court.
The administration arranged the views-exchange meeting on the law and order and the electoral code of conduct where eight candidates in the constituency and their representatives took part.
Witnesses said Rony entered the venue around 4:30pm while the meeting
was going on, held around the neck of the BNP contestant with his two hands and tried to strangle him.
Later, police detained the BCL leader and produced him before the mobile court, led by upazila nirbahi officer Shahinur Islam, which jailed him for three months.
Azharul said the incident manifested a volatile law-and-order situation in the country.
He demanded suspension of three policemen, including the officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station.
