A mobile court sentenced a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader to two years’ jail for violating the electoral code in Hathazari upazila during union parishad election on Saturday.
The mobile court, led by Judicial Magistrate Harunur Rashid, handed down the jail term to Nurul Azim Rony, 26, general secretary of the city unit BCL and nephew of Nurul Afsar, AL-backed chairman candidate of the union, in the afternoon. Besides, a firearm and some bullets and a magazine were recovered from his possession, for which a case was filed. The case will run as a regular case, the court said. Members of Border Guard Bangladesh arrested Rony from Chariaboard Government Primary School polling centre under Mirzapur union around 12:30pm as he along with his party men was trying to capture the centre.
Police also recovered a 9mm pistol, 15 rounds of bullet and a magazine after searching Rony’s body.
The law enforcers also arrested eight other people from the spot.
