People have captured a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader who was carrying a firearm near a bank in Dhaka, suspecting him to be a mugger.
Masud Parvez was caught near the Pubali Bank at Moghbazar, beaten up and handed to the police on Sunday.
Parvez later told reporters at the Ramna
Police Station he was the general secretary for the Rampura unit of the ruling Awami League’s student front. He is a student of the Malibagh’s Abu Jar Gifari College.
He was found carrying a gun, DMP Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sardar told this news agency. Sardar, however, claimed to be unaware of his political affiliation.
The local people had spotted Parvez following a man near the bank and tugging at his bag, prompting bystanders to catch him.
Parvez said, the gun he was carrying belonged to a friend, whom he named ‘Sourav’.
He claimed his friend was with him on his motorcycle but fled on seeing the crowd getting hold of him.
Parvez said, he knew the man ‘Belal’ he was following.
The BCL leader said he worked in Belal’s auto parts business.
He claimed Belal and his partner ‘Azad’ had promised him a motorcycle once he became the general secretary of the union.
But he said, he was angry because Belal had gone back on his promise and “wanted to confront him.”
BCL’s Rampura unit is under the student body’s Dhaka Metropolitan (South) unit.
The BCL will take organisational action against him if found guilty, said Anisur Rahman, president of the unit.
