BCL leader held during snatching at RU Students set motorcycle on fire

Students of Rajshahi University held a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader of Rajshahi University unit and his aid while the duo were trying to snatch on campus riding on motorcycle yesterday (Wednesday) evening.
Later, students handed over them to police after beating up. Angry students also set motorcycle on fire. The arrestees were identified as Jony Ahmed alias Sajib, BCL RU unit assistant secretary and a master’s year student of information science and library management department of the university and his aid Salman Sharif, resident of Keshobpur area of the city.
Witnesses said, two first year students of genetic engineering department were talking at the university senate building premises around 5:30pm.
In the mean time, BCL leader Jony and his aid Rajon came there by riding motor-cycle and claiming them as BCL leaders started interrogating the students.
At one stage of questioning, BCL leaders hurled abusive words towards them and snatched TK 2,700 and two mobile phones from them forcibly and tried to flee.
While the students started screaming, students who were playing at Sabash Bangladesh playground, nearly the senate building, rushed to the spot and caught them with red handed and started beating up.
Later, students handed the duo over to police while police, being informed rushed to the spot.
Some angry students swooped on the snatchers even though taking them on police custody. Then Police beat up Rafiq Suny, a student of Bangla department severally with stick to take the situation under control. Being aggrieved, students set motorcycle on fire.
Meanwhile, filing case in this regard was under processing, said Humayun Kabir, Officer-In-Charge of Motihar thana police station.
“The legal steps against the responsible men would be taken after filing case”, he also said.
RU Proctor Prof Tarikul Hasan said the snatchers now under police custody and they would take legal steps against the duo.
Contacted, BCL RU unit president said, the accused BCL leader has been recommended to central president for suspension.
