A Dhaka court on Friday granted a five-day remand for Amit Saha, the Deputy Legal Affairs Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s BUET unit, and Hosssain Mohammad Toha of Mechanical Engineering department in connection with the brutal murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad in a university residential hall.
Judge of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka, Sarafuzzaman Ansary, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the investigation officer for remand for the two accused.
Investigation Officer of the case and Inspector (DB) Md Wahiduzzaman produced the accused in the court yesterday and sought 10-day remand for each for the proper investigation of the case. After hearing him the court passed the order.
Earlier on Thursday, police arrested three accused including Chhatra League leader Amit Saha in connection with the brutal murder of Abrar Fahad.
Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested Amit from Dhaka’s Sabujbagh around 11:00 am, said Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (media) of DMP.
Before Abrar was summoned by BCL men, Amit was inquiring about his whereabouts through exchanging messages with some
other students, according to the sources.
The other two accused are Mizan, a roommate of the victim, and Hosssain Mohhammad Toha of Mechanical Engineering department.
Mizan, a student of BUET’s Water Resources Engineering department was arrested from the campus around 12:30 pm and Toha was arrested in Mawna of Gazipur, police said.
Abrar Fahad, a second-year-student of the university’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering department, was beaten to death allegedly by some BCL leaders at Amit’s room between 7:30pm of Sunday and 2:30am of Monday.
The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses and across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar.
Law enforcers suspect, that Abrar was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some recent deals with India.
Later, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 with the Chawkbazar Police Station.
