The tendon of a student of Kobi Sufia Kamal Hall of Dhaka University (DU) has been cut fiercely with a machete by Iffata Jahan alias Esha, President of the hall unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
The attacker insulted and tortured Morsheda Akter, a fourth year student of Botany Department of the university before cutting the tendon of her left leg in a room of the hall on Tuesday night on charge of taking part in the on-going quota reform movement, residential student sources said.
The torturing news of Morsheda spread in the hall and the agitated students started demonstration demanding expulsion of the heinous attacker from the hall dormitory and university. At one stage, the angry general students beat Esha in a room and garlanded her with shoes, reports media.
Following demonstration, the hall authorities went to the room and rescued Esha and pledged for disciplinary actions against her. Soon after the rescuing of Esha, the university administration hung a notice regarding her temporary expulsion from hall and all academic activities, a residential student said. Earlier, Esha was expelled from the BCL accusing her violating the organization rules. BCL central committee president Saifur Rahman and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain issued a statement of the expulsion, she said.
Seeking anonymity, some witnesses said, Esha assaulted three more students in a room at 12:15 am on Wednesday. Even she cut the tendon of Morsheda when she was screaming to gather the other students. However, another student said that Morsheda rushed in and kicked the window pens that caused her injuries. Protesting the incident, hundreds of students took position outside the hall demanding expulsion of Esha. They returned to the hall at about 4:00am. DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani confirmed that Iffat Jahan had been expelled from the university. They university authorities handed Morsheda to her relatives after giving treatment, he claimed.
He said also that Morsheda was expelled from the hall a few moths ago. Shamim Banu, a Residential Teacher of the hall, admitted of the injury to Morsheda Khanom.
She said that they saved Esha from the hands of the angry demonstrators. Dr Galib, Medical Officer of Government Karmachari Hospital, said that they sewed the leg of Morsheda as she was admitted to the hospital around 1:30am.
