Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has expelled its four members, including a central leader, for allegedly abducting a businessman for ransom. The ruling party’s student front announced the decision in a circular issued on Saturday. The expelled BCL members are – Central committee’s Deputy Sports Secretary Srijan Ghosh Sajib, Jagannath Hall unit Vice-President Anupam Chandra, Mohsin Hall unit Student Scholarship Secretary Abdulla-al Mamun and activist ‘Himel’. Police on Thursday night learned that Farhad Islam, owner of a mobile-recharge outlet, is being held captive at a room in Jagannath Hall in Dhaka University and the abductors have contacted his family for a ransom of Tk 500,000. They rescued Farhad from Sajib’s room at the dormitory’s Govinda Chandra Dev building and arrested the four BCL men along with Dhaka College student ‘Bappi’ and a businessman named Arfan Patwari at Friday noon. The kidnap suspects will also be expelled from the university, said Proctor Prof Amzad Ali. “We usually order temporary expulsions in such cases. We can’t take the measures now because both vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique and acting Vice-Chancellor Nasrin Ahmed are not in the campus.”
