DU Correspondent :
The Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on Tuesday night chased resident teachers, vandalised office room of the hall provost and terrorised resident students of the Bijoy Ekattar Hall, Dhaka University (DU), in order to grab hall dormitories.
Meanwhile, The BCL men also clobbered a journalist, when he was returning to his room in the same hall after doing professional duty.
Some resident students and a teacher told The New Nation seeking anonymity that the rampage was led by the Hall unit BCL President Fakir Rasel and
General Secretary Nayan Hawlader. “They brought out a procession, chased some resident teachers and vandalized the provost’s room keeping him inside,” they said.
The hall’s Provost Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan told The New Nation, “They broke the glasses of my room in my presence and tried to assault me when I tried to calm down the situation.”
According to sources, the five-year-old hall is the lone dormitory in the university where the hall authorities have absolute power in allotting rooms to students based on their merit. Earlier, the BCL unit created unrest several times to allocate their activists threatening the common students.
UNB Dhaka University reporter Imran Hossain was physically assaulted, when he was returning to his room in the same hall after doing professional duty. About 12-15 rowdy BCL activists and followers of General Secretary Nayan Hawlader clubbed him with stamps.
Nayan Hawlader said, “Several resident teachers confined our 4-5 activists inside the provost’s room and rebuked us badly. Then some of our activists broke the glasses of the room.”
“Some of our activists walloped the journalist as he misbehaved with them. But I could not take the responsibility as they did it without my consent,” he added.
While asking the illegal allotment, Nayan said, “Our DU unit leaders reprimanded us because of our small number of activists. If we cannot give them seats, why will they attend our programmes?”
However, DU unit BCL President Abid Al Hassan said that organisational actions would be taken against the responsible students. The hall administration formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.
“Exemplary punishment will be taken against the trouble mongers after getting the report of the committee,” said the hall provost.
