While the leg-spinner in this country got limited exposure, at least in the domestic circuit, the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) latest decision to include a spinner of this type in every team of the BPL T20 in mandatory basis came as soothing pleasure for Aminul Islam Biplob.
Like Aminul, most of the leg-spinners of Bangladesh hardly get any team in domestic circuit as the team management believes they could leak many runs which could hamper their aspiration to clinch the title.
At the same time, the leg-spinner that Bangladesh got till that time, could hardly prove their mettle.
But Aminul Islam seemed to be a different type of bowler as he showed the necessary skill to thrive in the International cricket. He made his International debut with a T20 against Zimbabwe in the recently concluded Tri-nation T20 series in Bangladesh and ended up with 2-18 in four overs. His ability to land the ball in the right areas consistently caught the attention.
But he was injured after that match and missed the rest of the matches. And he also didn’t play the first round of the NCL.
With BPL, which this year named after the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and second round of National Cricket League (NCL) approaching fast, Aminul preparing to prove that his performance in his only International game is not fluke.
The moment when he gets him mentally ready, the mandatory inclusion of one leg-spinner in every BPL team has excited him to such extent that he said it was a good opportunity for him.
He believes that if BCB doesn’t make it mandatory, most of the BPL franchisees wouldn’t show any willingness to take a local leg-spinner in their side.
“This is not only good for me, but also for all of the leg-spinner of the country,” Aminul said here on Monday.
“The BPL is a big stage, so everyone wants to prove them here. There will be good competition amongst the leg-spinners which eventually would benefit our country. I am really excited for this opportunity and will try my best to utilize it.”
Aminul said he is now fully fit to play after recovering from the finger injury that he sustained during his debut match against Zimbabwe in Tri- nation T20 series and is ready to play the second round of NCL for Dhaka Metro.
“I have been working under BCB coach Sohel Islam. He teaches me the art of leg-spin. Hopefully I will show a good performance in the NCL,” he said.
While the critics said that he doesn’t possess the turn like the good leg- spinner, he differed with it saying that he can also be a good turner of the ball.
“In Chattogram wicket, in which I made my debut, I didn’t get big turn because this wicket is not that favourable for spinners. Normally I can turn the ball.”
He however said that his stock weapon is his leg-spin and he works hard to hone this skill more.
“Hopefully I can baffle the batsmen with leg-spin. I know I should bring up some diversity so that the batsmen get double minded with thinking whether it is leg-spin or googly. Currently I am working on it,” he concluded.
