Bangladesh Test and T20 skipper Shakib Al Hasan will have to be sidelined for next two and a half months to three months due to a fractured finger. However, he can start playing competitive cricket once this period is over and if his pain reduces. But if the pain remains, he might have to undergo a surgery.
So, there is a thin chance that if the ace all-rounder can overcome the pain, then he might resume cricket from as soon as the upcoming sixth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). But Nazmul Hasan Papon, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) who once insisted Shakib to play in the Asia Cup even without being 100% fit, is now of the opinion that Shakib should not take part in the next BPL even if he becomes physically fit for it.
Papon believes that with the World Cup quickly approaching, a fully fit Shakib is much more needed than a half-fit Shakib playing in the BPL. And hence, he thinks next January, when the BPL is slated to happen, will be the most suitable time for Shakib to undergo the surgery and then recover within time to represent Bangladesh in the World Cup.
“I don’t get the answer even now how he was infected. But it is a good news that the infection is healing. I have seen in the media that he had wanted to have his finger operated before the Asia Cup. If he still wants to do it, this (during the BPL) is the best time,” the BCB boss said.
According to Papon, all he wants is a full fit Shakib in the World Cup, “After taking rest for about two months, the finger should be operated. There’s still enough time left, so we will definitely get a full fit Shakib in the World Cup. The upcoming few series’ are not so important that he must play there.”
If Shakib does not play in the next BPL, then Dhaka Dynamites will lose their icon player and the captain. That is a huge loss for them. But Papon thinks a solution could be brought up with the help of the BPL Governing Council. “We can not prioritize a franchise more than a national team player. Definitely they (Dhaka Dynamites) will suffer, but there can be alternative solution as well. They can look for that solution after discussing the matter with the BPL Governing Council. But I will still maintain the fact that Shakib should play only once he is completely fit.”
He also added, “When people have a doubt that his (Shakib’s) condition worsened just because he had to play in the Asia Cup, so I think he should not play any other series or tournament right now. Asia Cup is more important than BPL or IPL. And again, the World Cup is far more important than the Asia Cup. We want a hundred percent fit Shakib in the World Cup.”
To be noted, Shakib is currently in Melbourne for treatment. After being admitted into a local hospital for five days, he was discharged Friday local time afternoon.
