BCB mourns Richie Benaud’s death

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in a statement on Friday expressed deep shock on the death of the legendary Australian cricket commentator and former Test captain Richie Benaud (1930-2015).
The president and directors of the BCB extended the most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and friends of Benaud and Cricket Australia on this extreme grief.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon, MP, in a message, paid tribute to the legacy of Richie Benaud.
“Richie Benaud’s voice was an institution in its own right. Generations of Bangladeshi cricket lovers have grown up listening to the ‘voice of cricket’ and many in this country and around the world have been inspired and drawn to the beautiful game of cricket through his unique style of commentary,” Papon said.
“Not many players can replicate the same level of greatness in a different field after retirement but Benaud, who has had a glittering playing and captaincy career, managed to take his role as a commentator, cricket writer and cricket analyst to a whole new height which has remained unsurpassed till this day,” added the BCB chief.
The news of Benaud’s demise has been received with great sadness in Bangladesh where he has always been revered as a broadcast commentary icon.
Richie Benaud had been receiving treatment for skin cancer since November last and passed away at the age of 84 died in Sydney, Australia on Friday.
A veteran of 63 Test matches, Benaud played a pivotal role in the formation of World Series Cricket in the 1970’s and was one of the world’s most recognised commentators.
The Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott offered Benaud’s family a state funeral after his death on Friday, according to The Guardian.
Benaud, born in Penrith, New South Wales, enjoyed a successful career as a wily leg-spin bowler and middle-order batsman.
Benaud was the first player to score 2,000 Test runs and take 200 Test wickets yet was as renowned for his captaincy. He led his country in 28 Tests and never lost a series as Australian captain.
