Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will conduct a census on slums and floating people in the country from April 25 to May 2 for the third time. “We will survey all slums and floating people to know and figure out the key problems of the slum dwellers from April 25 to May 2,” an official of BBS told BSS on Thursday. He said the BBS conducted two censuses on slum people earlier.
According to BBS sources, the third census will be able to scrutinize the number, structure, gender and housing condition of slum, nature of slum people, common standard of living and wretchedness of slum people, income patterns and poverty scenario.
The census will be conducted in four big cities,Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and Rajshahi, the sources said. Four indicators out of 48 in the Millennium Development Goals will be evaluated on the filed level information.
The government will try to ensure education, treatment facilities, employment, housing, drinking water and security to the slum people after the census, the sources added. The census usually is conducted at every 10 years, which provides overall information of the people.
