Most of the areas in the town went under knee-deep water due to incessant rain for the last couple of days, causing immense sufferings to the town dwellers.
Waterlogging has become a never-ending problem for the residents of the town, thanks to unplanned constructions, waste dumping, poor drainage system and filling up of water bodies, said locals.
Local people alleged that the town goes under water
even after a little rain due to weak drainage system.
Visiting College Para, Mourail, Banik Para, Gokarno Road, Kazipara, Moddhopara, Haldarpara, Munsef Para, Fulbaria, West paikpara, West Medda, Tanker Para in Brahmanbaria Municipality area on Friday, the correspondent found knee-deep stagnant water in those areas.
Bishwajit Sujon Banik, resident of Banik Para area said that the municipality was established in 1868 but authorities have little concern over improving the drainage system of this 150 years-old town.
“The municipality remains busy in removing wastes ignoring the need of improving drainage system.”
Shafi Ahmed, resident of College Para area, said students of schools and colleges are the worst sufferer as they have to wade through filthy water for attending classes during monsoon.
Recognising the poor drainage system, Nikash Chandra Mitra, Brahmanbaria municipality executive engineer, said “We have been trying to resolve the problem soon. The problem can’t be resolved overnight, it requires sufficient fund.”
