Bangladesh Bank has been accorded the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) Policy Award for its outstanding contribution to the Mobile Banking policy initiative under its financial inclusion strategy.
The award was given to Bangladesh’s central bank from the AFI’s ongoing conference in Trinidad, Bangladesh Bank governor’s secretariat general manager Asaduzzaman told UNB today (Wednesday), referring to a message received in Dhaka.
The AFI conference recognized the Bangladesh Bank’s extraordinary role to bring the grassroots people under the banking coverage through different measures including opening of bank account with TK 10 and mobile banking services.
Asaduzzaman said that at present, about 95 million (9.5 crore) people hold bank account across the country to receive different kinds of banking and financial services.
Bangladesh has also been recognized as the most advanced country among the South Asia and Africa regions in regard to financial inclusion and mobile banking services, he added.
The BB official informed that currently, 28 banks out of the total 56 are operating mobile banking services with total clients of about 16.7 million (1.67 crore) people.
He said these banks have appointed 414,000 (4.14 lakh) agents across the country to operate their mobile banking service. Everyday, on an average about Tk 2.86 billion (286 crore) are transacted through mobile banking service.
