Bangladesh Bank is making the database of corrupt bank officials with a view to ensuring good governance in the banking sector, said BB Governor Dr Atiur Rahman.
“Long day’s dirtiness and corruption are frizzing under the carpet of the banking sector, but the central bank is trying to clean it evidently as part of its responsibility for controlling financial crimes from the banking sector as well as economy, he said while addressing an Award Giving Ceremony-2015 under Education Support Programme of Prime Bank Foundation.
He said that the central bank would take action against the corrupt officials under the rules and regulations of the Bank Company Act.
“The central bank is determined to establish good governance in the financial sector. So we will not tolerate any single issue related with corruption and illegal banking transactions,” said Dr. Atiur.
The data is inputting on the basis of illegal transactions and financial crimes violating banking rules and regulations. Under the database, the central bank is creating the data of corrupt bank officials or respective persons, he said.
The BB governor said, “Corruptions in the banking sector have created since long, So it is hard to remove it within the short time. But, we are being able to find out the corrupt bank officials related with financial crime, as the total environment is looking like dusty.
He appreciated the managements of the Prime Bank for their contribution in developing country’s education system as the bank has taken several educational support programmes.
Dr. Atiur called upon the financial institutions to spend at least 30 per cent mandatory from their CSR fund. “We want to spend a portion of fund from the yearly profit of the banking sector to facilitate the underprivileged people of the country,” he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Azam J Chowdhury, Chairman of Prime Bank limited claimed that some private commercial banks are not properly utilizing their CSR fund. Under the programme, Prime Bank Foundation awarded a total of 2,445 students, including 170 students in 2007 followed by 122 in 2008, 198 in 2009, 196 in 2010, 205 in 2011, 386 in 2012, 394 in 2013, 402 in 2014 and 372 in the current year.
Md. Nader Khan, Chairman, Prime Bank Foundation in his address of welcome said this year a total of 372 students of the country will receive long-term and renewable stipends equivalent to Tk 2,400 per month, which will continue till the end of their studies.
Students from all 64 districts of the country who are pursuing their graduation level studies are availing the benefit from this stipend. This stipend assists the poor but meritorious students in completing their studies successfully, he said.
