The Bangladesh Bank’s initiative to draw up its autonomy plan appears to have upset Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
“Its action would suggest it is more important than the government,” a visibly displeased minister said on Wednesday.
The bank recently informed the finance ministry of its decision to prepare an action plan for ‘necessary autonomy’.
Muhith said the bank’s belief that it lacked enough autonomy was unfounded, and that he would talk to it on the matter.
The minister said the central bank had been given power over all other state-owned banks. But it was not empowered to dissolve their board of directors.
