Shah Abdul Karim, a legendary Baul singer, is very popular around the country, especially in the Bhati area. He was famous in the remote village area, but became popular in the city area also only a few years ago when some newcomer singers established themselves by singing his songs of which some are very popular. He wrote more than 1500 songs. Shah Abdul Karim won Ekushey Padak in 2001 for his outstanding songs.
Shah Abdul Karim was born on February 15, 1916, in the remote village Ujan Dhol Dhirai, Sunamganj. He grew up amid financial crisis and faced struggle from early childhood.
He used to spend his labour in agriculture field for livelihood, but nothing could stop him from creating music. Karim was passionate about music from early childhood and started research in singing and writing even though being a little literate. He mostly got inspiration from his wife Altafbunnessa, whom he affectionately called Sorola. He has a son named Shah Nur Jalal. He is also a singer.
Shah Abdul Karim raised his voice against injustice, prejudice and communalism through his writings. He portrayed Bhati area’s people’s love, dream and happiness in his writings. He got inspiration from another legendary musician Fakir Lalon Shah. He wrote lots of spiritual songs including Marfati and Dehotottwo.
On September 12, 2009, Shah Abdul Karim passed away of respiratory problems in a hospital in Sylhet.
