S A Shofiee Sylhet :
The number of unlicenced battery-run rickshaws and vans is rapidly increasing on different roads of Sylhet district, causing accidents on a regular basis as their high speed does not match with their structure. These vehicle are operated by rechargeable batteries and consume a huge amount of electricity.
When the district is gripped by regular power outages, there is no account of how much electricity is eaten up by these rickshaws. But, the authorities concerned remain totally indifferent about these unauthorised and hazardous vehicles for unknown reasons.
Moreover, some people in several places including Sadar upazila, Dakshin Surma, Biyanibazar, Khanaighat, jointapur and Golapgonj are engaged in illegal business of making these unsecured vehicles and are providing to the clients across the district. Raising serious concern over the accidents, local conscious people said unregulated operation of the battery-operated vehicles tends to cause traffic problems and are causing nuisance on the roads.
Sylhet District traffic police said the battery-operated rickshaws should be properly registered and for safety, these vehicle can only ply on the mofussil roads.
Recently, the law enforcers have imposed a restriction over the movement of battery-run rickshaws and vans along the main roads of Sylhet City. But these illegal vehicles are plying indiscriminately outside of the town.
Nuraalam Mina, superintendent of police in Sylhet , said, “As Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) did not give approval for the use of such battery-powered rickshaws on highways, we halted the movement of those vehicles.
But on the roads apart from highways, we could not do so as the higher authorities have not advised us to conduct any eviction drive against the battery-powered vehicles.”
