Battery driven rickshaw causes multiple health risks in city

Increasing numbers of battery driven rickshaws with its acute and harsh hydraulic horn creates multiple health risks for the people of all ages in the capital.
“The acute and harsh sound of the horns of battery driven rickshaws are creating huge and multiple health risks. The sound injures hearing health, increases blood pressure, creates heart complaints and affects human brains severely,” Professor Dr. Mozaharul Haque, the former Advisor of World Health Organisation (WHO) told The New Nation on Sunday.
He said, the children and elderly people and the patients of high blood pressure and heart disease are being seriously affected by the horns.
The environmentalists also expressed their anxiety at the huge pollution created by the battery driven rickshaws.
 “The battery driven rickshaws with its hydraulic horn are creating wide ranges of sound pollution in the city. The batteries of those rickshaws are leaving worst impact on our environment,” MA Matin, General Secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon told The New Nation.
He said that both the battery driven rickshaws and the hydraulic horns are banned according to our laws. But those rickshaws are found in our capital city’s streets in huge number.
He urged the law enforcers to implement
the laws properly in this regards. The battery driven rickshaws have been found in Keraniganj, Tongi, Gazaria and other suburban areas surrounding Dhaka in years. But in the recent months, those rickshaws are found plying in different areas of the capital.
Gandaria, Jurain, Shyampur, Wari, Syedabad, Jatrabari, Mohammadpur and even adjacent areas of Gulistan find the battery driven rickshaws.
The rickshaw pullers used to ring its hydraulic horns repeatedly. Its harsh sound posing huge health risks including high blood pressures, cardiac problems, hearing problems and other health complications.
Especially the sound is highly harmful for the tender aged school going boys and girls.
“Many young students of my school live at Gandaria. Those students regularly alleged that they are affected by the severe harsh sound of the rickshaw’s horn. It should be stopped for the sake of the kids health,” Md. Mosharraf Hossain, the Principal of the City International School and College of Gandaria Campus, told The New Nation.
He said, the harsh sound of the rickshaw’s horn is seriously harmful for mental and physical health of the children.
The parents of the school-going children also urged the concern authorities to withdraw the rickshaws.
The passengers of those rickshaws expressed their anxiety over the accident risks of those vehicles.
They said that those rickshaws are prone to accident as its front side is light and the drivers are not well trained to drive an engine driven vehicle.
“The untrained rickshaw pullers run it with speed and frequently involved in accidents,” said Rafiul Haque from Demra in the capital.
