BASIC Bank Ltd on Monday sacked its Deputy Managing Director A Monayem Khan over the bank’s Tk 4,500 crore loan scam.
The bank authorities earlier removed three Deputy Managing Directors, from their jobs over the loan scam. The sacked Deputy Managing Directors are: Fazlus Sobhan, Md Ruhul Alam, Md Salim and General Manager Md Mahbubul Alam.
Admitting the latest development, Alauddin A Majid, Chairman of the BASIC Bank told The New Nation on Monday night that Monayem Khan has been dismissed after completion of all due process. Officials of BASIC banks said that the four had been sacked as they were involved in irregularities over loan disbursements and misuse of bank’s funds.
In September last year, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed 56 cases against 156 persons, including 26 bank officials, over the sensational loan scam after four years of investigation.
The others accused are the borrowers or officials linked to bank audits. The ACC, however, refrained from filing cases against the bank’s former Chairman Sheikh Abdul Hye Bachchu and even any former director of the bank. In May 2014, Bangladesh Bank had removed BASIC Bank’s Managing Director Kazi Fakhrul Islam for indulging corruption in loan disbursement which led to misappropriation of Tk 4,500 crore from three of the bank’s branches in Dhaka. The fund was embezzled over a period of five years.
