Thousands are celebrating the Pahela Falgun, kicking off the first quarter of festivities in 2016, on the MC Collage premises on Saturday.
Clad in yellow, orange and other bright colours that symbolise the Spring, the people are in line for welcoming Falgun with a myriad of flowers, poems, songs and dances.
The day is the first day of the Bengali month Falgun marking the beginning of the Spring season by setting a tune for happiness, love and warmth.
As the winter leaves have been evolved by nature, the Spring’s flowers such as shimul, polash, marigold are being worn by women, who adorn themselves with ‘Bashonti’ clothing – mostly in yellow, orange and red.
MC Collage has always been the cultural heartbeat of the city since time immemorial, hence it is the venue for all cultural celebration, and Pohela Falgun this year is no different.
Jatiya Boshonto Utshab Udjapon Parishad-1422, in association with Grameenphone, is organising cultural programmes across the Sylhet, commencing with the first phase of celebrations at 7:30am at Collage Ground in the usual hub of festivities.
Different private universities and colleges have also arranged programmes, marking the day.
Jhenaidah Correspondent adds: Different cultural organisations and personalities in Jhenaidah observed the spring festival locally known as Basanta Utsab on Saturday.
To mark the day a colourful rally was brought from Government Nurunnahar Women’s College in the morning that paraded the town.
The Mohona Sanskritik Goshthi, a local cultural organization also brought another rally where the women participants weared yellow and red colour dresses, while the male almost similar to the women. The organization arranged a song festival.
Morning Bell Children Academy, an educational institution for the children in Jhenaidah town arranged a cake fare (pitha mela) at their premises. Thousands of people including children participated in the day long festival.
