Veteran Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq has died in hospital care at the age of 85.
He breathed his last at Dhaka’s Ad-Din Hospital at 8:30 am Saturday, according to Dr Nahid Yasmin, the hospital’s director general.
The former attorney general played a prominent role as a lawyer during the military-backed caretaker government’s rule.
He was also known for his involvement in various social and charitable causes.
Barrister Rafique was the chairman of the hospital and a sombre mood engulfed its doctors and staff upon his passing.
Tabibur Rahman Akash, public relations officer of Ad-Din Hospital, said the jurist’s body would be taken to his Paltan residence after a namaz-e-janaza or funeral prayer at the mosque near the hospital at 10:30 am.
His body will be taken to Baitul Mukarram National Mosque for a second namaz-e-janaza after the Zuhr prayers.
He will later be laid to rest at Dhaka’s Banani Graveyard following another funeral prayer at the Supreme Court premises in the afternoon.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the senior lawyer and offered his condolences to the bereaved family.
Barrister Rafique was hospitalised on Oct 15 while suffering from urosepsis and lung infections apart from anaemia and low albumin.
He later suffered a stroke and was put on life support on Oct 20 when he suffered a septic shock.
Rafique-ul Huq was born to Mumin-Ul Huq, a doctor, and Nurjahan Begun in Kolkata in 1935. He earned his LLB and master’s degrees from Calcutta University.
