Noted jurist Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq was laid to eternal rest at Banani graveyard in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.
He was buried around 3:00pm after a namaz-e-janaza at Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) premises at 2:00pm.
Earlier, his two janazas were held at Ad-Din Women’s Medical College Hospital and Baitul Mukarram National Mosque respectively. Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq breathed his last on Saturday morning at the intensive care unit of Ad-Deen Hospital in Dhaka. He left behind his son Barrister Fahim-ul Haq. His wife died in 2011.
People from all walks of life paid their last tributes to the veteran lawyer after the news of his death was announced.
The veteran Supreme Court lawyer was admitted to Ad-din Hospital on October 15 and returned to his Paltan residence after discharge from the hospital on October 17. He was again admitted to the hospital on the same day.
Rafique-ul Huq was then put on life support at the hospital on October 18. However, he tested negative for coronavirus.
Suffering from different diseases, including anemia, the eminent lawyer had been undergoing treatment under Dr Richmond Roland Gomage.
Born on November 2, 1935 at Subornapur village in Kolkata, Barrister Rafique served as the Attorney General from April 7, 1990 to December 17, 1990.
Rafique-ul Huq started his career as a lawyer in Kolkata in 1960. In 1990, he served as the Attorney General of Bangladesh. He was born in Kolkata in 1935. His father Mumin-ul Huq was a doctor and his mother Nurjahan Begum was a housewife.
He obtained his law degree in 1960. He completed MA and LLB degrees from Calcutta University. He did bar-at-law from the UK in 1962.
During the period of caretaker government in 2007-2008, he was acclaimed for handling cases as a lawyer in favour of the country’s top political leaders.
Barrister Huq was active in social work. He was life member and Vice-Chairman of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh and member of its National Council (since 1976), life member of Bangladesh National Society for the Blind, Chairman of Society for Education and Care of Hearing-impaired Children of Bangladesh, chairman of Management Committee of BIRDEM Hospital and Secretary General of the management board of Dhaka Shishu Hospital.
