A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police on Monday night detained former adviser to a caretaker government Barrister Mainul Hosein in a defamation case filed in Rangpur.
Detectives arrested him from the residence of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rob in city’s Uttara following an arrest warrant issued against Barrister Mainul in the case, Mahbub Alam, Joint Commissioner, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told The New Nation yesterday night.
Barrister Mainul Hosein, who is at the centre of a firestorm of criticism for abusing a female journalist on air, was arrested from the house of one of the Oikya Front leaders Abdur Rab around 9:30pm, the Joint Commissioner said.
He added that Barrister Mainul was arrested in a defamation case filed in Rangpur over his abuse of journalist Masuda Bhatti during a talk show aired on October 16 on private channel Ekattor TV.
“Mainul Hosein was taken to the DB office at Minto Road from Rab’s House No 14, Uttara, Sector-3,” Mahbub said.
Over the past two days, Barrister Mainul, also a former MP, was accused in six other defamation cases filed at local courts in Dhaka, Jamalpur, Kurigram, Brahmanbaria, Bhola and Cumilla.
He has already secured advance bail in three of the cases. He is likely to be produced before Dhaka CMM court today.
