A Dhaka court yesterday sent Barrister Ashraful Islam to the jail in a defamation case filed against him for allegedly making slanderous remarks against Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Magistrate Atiqur Rahman of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court passed the order after Barrister Ashraf was produced to the CMM Court on Monday afternoon. Earlier, he was arrested at Shahjalal International Airport and taken to the office of Detective Branch (DB). Later, he was produced to the CMM Court.
Meanwhile, some lawyers wanted to conduct hearing after he was produced to the court. But he did not allow anyone to move in the court on his behalf. He himself also did not appeal for his bail in the court.
However, Barrister Ashraf made submissions about different incidents, occurred between Justice Shamsuddin and himself in the past, while he was in the dock of the courtroom on the occasion.
