Teachers of Barisal Government Polytechnic Institute continuing strike formed human chain in the institute on Tuesday demanding punishment of the assaulter on a teacher by a BCL cadre after the teacher protested stalking in the class.
The human chain and rally was addressed by Sajjad Hossain, Rajib Hossain, Asadullah Khan, Saiful Islam, Anisur Rahman and other leaders of the teachers association. The speakers said Shafiul Islam; a teacher was running a class of electro-medical department at about 11:00 am Sunday.
At that time Israfil Mim, a BCL cadre and fifth semester student of that department, started stalking and obscene behavior with a female student in the class. When teacher Shafiul Alam protesting the acts tried to control Israfil, then Israfil physically assaulted teacher Shafiul by slapping, boxing, kicking and beating with stick, the speakers added.
The other students of the class then rescuing assaulted teacher detained attacker BCL cadre Ibrahim and the teachers handed over him to police, the speakers told.
However police later released BCL cadre Israfil as per direction of the institute-principal, acknowledged Kotwali police station officer in charge Shakhawat Hossain.
The strike will continue till fulfill of the demand for assurances of the safety and security of the teachers, healthy academic environment and punishment of the attacker, told, the leaders of Barisal polytechnic teachers association.
Didarul Alam, acting principal of the institute, said after the incident, the teachers visiting the principal on Sunday noon, requested him to ensure safety and security of the teachers in the campus by taking strong disciplinary legal action against the teacher-assaulter student, but the principal failed to do that.
Mir Mosharraf Hossain, principal of the institute, said he came Dhaka on Monday for official works, and acting principal could tell about the fact of work abstentions by the teachers and other programmes.
I asked police to release the BCL cadre Israfil due to pressure of the BCL leaders after taking a bond giving condition of expulsion from the institute in repetition of such acts in future, the principal of the institute acknowledged.
On other hand classmates of accused BCL cadre Israfil Mim said he was intoxicated at the time of incident.
But the BCL cadres led by Polytechnic BCL secretary Hannan Bappi bringing out agitation procession cordoned the administrative section of the institute forced the principal to release of the detained BCL cadre Ibrahim, students told.
Israfil also told he was not in normal condition during the incident and later beg pardon to the principal for his behavior and the principal forgave him.
Hannan Bappi, Barisal polytechnic BCL secretary, alleged that the teachers exaggerating the issue even after pardoning the accused student by the principal.
