BSS, Rajshahi :
Some newly developed drought-tolerant and high-yielding wheat varieties, especially BARI Gom-30, have started gaining popularity among farmers of the drought-prone Barind tract.
With the breakthrough, the farmers have started using the varieties
instead of the outdated ones as they are getting more yields. Apart from this, many farmers are now become more interested in
wheat farming as they are facing problems in cultivation of Irri-Boro paddy in the water-stress condition in the Barind area comprising 25 upazilas of Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj districts.
BARIGOM-30, a short-duration wheat variety innovated by Bangladesh
Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), has opened up a door of enormous prospects for food security along with facing the adverse impact of climate change, said Dr Ilias Hossain, Principal Scientific Officer of Wheat Research Station.
Besides, the variety has been giving satisfactory yield if there is scanty rainfall with limited irrigation during the Irri-Boro season in the area.
Terming the development of the drought-tolerant varieties as the demand of time, Dr Ilias Hossain expected that the varieties would start contributing a lot to ensure food security. He, however, hoped that the varieties would bring a positive result for scores of farmers.
While sharing her experience, Jarina Begum, 35, a farmer of Nejampur village under Nachole Upazila, said the BARIGOM-30 variety has brought enormous benefit for them as they can cultivate wheat in drought prone rain fed environment.
By virtue of early harvesting characteristics the variety supplements the farming of mug bean and maize and vegetables.
She stated that it is a short duration and high yielding wheat and takes 102 to 110 days from cultivation to harvest and the expected output is around 13 to 18 mounds per bigha.
Apart from this, taste and flavour of the variety is better and its market price is comparatively higher than many other varieties. The declining rainfall coupled with enhanced temperature has left the agriculture sector in a vulnerable condition, she added.
“We are expanding seed of the high-yielding variety and farming technologies to the farmers to make them benefited in this regard,” said Dr Ilias.
